Q. Could you explain about you?
MIIM is an architecture and design practice based in Hong Kong founded in 2017. We believe that meaningful design can make a difference, make things better. At MIIM, we focus on creating socially responsible design that emphasizes the needs and experiences of people.
Q. Congratulations to the Asia Design Prize 2018. I would like to introduce your your work description.
Disposable drinking straw has a very short lifespan of around 10 minutes before we toss it away. However, it takes at least 500 years for a plastic straw to fully decompose. Most straws today are single-used foodware that are ending up in landfill or in our ocean. One disposal plastic straw can cause huge amount of damage to the environment. icicle is a solution to reduce plastic solid waste and provide a new way of drink. Just simply slide the pieces to take them apart for cleaning by hand or by dishwasher just like any other cutlery, no extra cleaning tool is required. To enjoy beverages, just snap the pieces back together. It is a long lasting foodware and completely free from BPA.
Q. How did you get inspired in this award?
Inspiration can be found in the little things and details around us. We realized the main problem with stainless steel straws or glass straws in the market is that they are not easy to clean. Visible cleanliness is crucial in foodware. Hence, we wanted to design a new form of straw which can be washed and reused just like any other cutlery. Icicle, a straw that be slide apart and snap together is the best solution.
